Evolutionary game theory and the origins of money and sex
In this talk I will provide a brief introduction to evolutionary game theory, illustrated by two very different examples. In the first we ask how money-like systems can have arisen, and show that they facilitate cooperation between strangers, while in the second we consider why sexual reproduction almost always leads to animals have two sexes. Joint work with Marcus Frean.
Abundance estimation of birds from their calls
Many bird species are far easier to hear than see. I will introduce the AviaNZ project, which combines mathematics, ecology, statistics, and conservation biology to attempt to recognise species, and estimate their abundance, based on their calls.
